Kulanui Ma Hilo Lions Club hosted its first induction ceremony March 18 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, welcoming 34 new members.

Kulanui Ma Hilo Lions Club hosted its first induction ceremony March 18 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, welcoming 34 new members.

The new group is the only campus Lions Club in the state.

The ceremony was attended by Nadine Nishioka, Hawaii Lions Club district governor, Ellen Kusano and Jerry Chang of UH-Hilo, and Roy Takemoto of the Hawaii County mayor’s office.

Two past international directors with Lions Club International, Herbert Watanabe and Maurice Kahawaii, also spoke during the ceremony.

The Kulanui Ma Hilo Lions Club’s president is Twylah Morelli.

The charter took place during the Lions Club’s centennial year. Founded in 1917, Lions Club International is a secular, nonpolitical service organization with more than 1.4 million members around the world and chapters in more than 200 countries.

East Hawaii chapters include Akaka Falls, Hamakua, Hilo, Hilo Crescent City, Hilo Waiakea and Puna.
